BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

National Banana transport figures for Week 11 were just over 492,000 which was approximately 3000 less cartons than the week prior. Temperatures in the far north are similar to be last week with early A.M. temperatures falling within a range of 19.3 - 25.3C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures still ranging 26.0- 30.2C with varying degrees of humidity. North Qld banana growing regions experienced further rainfalls associated with tropical season with Mareeba receiving 167mm for the week to date; Walkamin with 198.3mm; the coastal regions like Innisfail had falls totaling 242.4mm and South Johnston totaling 228mm across the week! Late this week the threat of Cyclone Narelle is becoming reality, despite being on a direct route for Coen some 490km north of Mareeba for e.g. , with the size of the weather event and the rain it will bring, we may see further falls in our region and of course the waterways will see increased flows.

We are seeing the impact of the wet, humid weather throughout a number of Banana displays with blotchy mould present, somewhat dull fruit, light skin marking, thrip damage, sap staining etc - some better displays than others out there.

Queensland major retailers had bananas priced as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $4.49/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.50-4.90/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.50/kg.

AVOCADO OVERVIEW

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

Week 11, 2025 - Avocado production for this week reached 520,427 tray equivalents, approximately 56,000 less than the previous week.

Production across the country saw North Queensland take the lead with 58.59% (Shepard) of production; followed by WA/NT (Hass) accounting for 32.07% of the national production; then Central Queensland accounting for 8.80%; and Central NSW for 0.54% of the total production for the week.

It is forecast that a total of some 604,098 tray equivalents will be dispatched this week (Week 12) nationally, with the majority of these being Shepard! Total production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 600K-622K tray equivalents per week. It is interesting to note that if we discount the small harvests of additional varietals, then the market is approximately 2/3 shepard and 1/3 hass currently. Should note, as previously discussed under the banana supply update, it has been a rather wet week in the far north and this is hampering harvests and also means that post harvest treatments have a vital role to play.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week, we saw hass pricing as follows - Aldi had Shepard’s at $1.19 eachColes Qld stores visited had Shepard avos at $1.00 each; and Woolworths were retailing Shepards at $1.00-$1.50ea depending upon store location.
