BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

National Banana transport figures for Week 24 were down by approximately 7,000 cartons on Week 23’s harvest at 482,000 cartons. Now that we have started winter, we can expect production to decline slightly as the temperatures cool and the hours of sunlight are less due to shorter days. Temperatures in the far north remain cooler with temps for last week early A.M. falling within a range of 14.9 - 21.0C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures still ranging 22.5 - 26.4C. North Qld banana growing regions experienced another relatively dry week with falls as follows: Mareeba receiving 2.8mm for the week to date; Walkamin with 7.8mm; the coastal regions still had more significant falls this week with Innisfail receiving a total of 73.2mm and South Johnston totaling 90.6mm across the week.

Banana displays have improved somewhat in terms of fruit quality - bloom generally brighter, though odd display with a presence of slightly dull fruit, light skin marking, thrip damage, sap staining etc .

Queensland major retailers had bananas priced as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $4.49/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.50/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.50/kg.

AVOCADO OVERVIEW

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows:

Week 24, 2025 - Avocado production for this week reached 411,358 tray equivalents, approximately 10,000 more than the previous week.

Production across the country saw North Queensland maintain the lead with 49.89% of production with the principal variety being suppled being hass; Central Queensland accounting for 44.19% of the national production followed next; then Southern QLD for 2.86%; then WA/NT for 1.44%; then Central NSW for 1.01%; then Sunshine Coast for 0.45% and TNR for 0.15% of the total production for the week. The preceding changing percentiles regarding region productivity, clearly demonstrates that a number of NQ Hass growers have either completed their hass season (smaller farms) or are coming closer to the end of production; the Central Qld region is now accounting for a stronger percentage and may well eclipse NQ next week; whilst regions further south are slowly starting.

It is forecast that a total of some 448,482 tray equivalents will be dispatched this week (Week 25) nationally, with the majority of these now being Hass! Total avocado production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within a similar range of 387K-452K tray equivalents per week.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week, we saw pricing as follows - Aldi with television advertising for Hass retailng at $1.19ea and featuring in their catalogue promotion whilst GMAX were at $2.49 each;  Coles Qld stores visited had Hass avos at $1.80 each; and Woolworths were retailing Hass at $1.20-$2.00 each depending upon store visit and Gmax Avo for $2.90/piece.
