BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

National Banana transport figures for week 30 have been overstated at 468,921 as one transport agent put their figures in late for week 29. Overall compared to week 29 cut the figures are up for just shy of 25,000 cartons. Temperatures in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures fall within a range of 14.0 - 21.5C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures still ranging 25.2 - 31.3C. Rainfall in North Qld banana growing regions this week were rather scant on the Tablelands with recordings as follows: Mareeba receiving 0mm for the week and Walkamin with 19.2mm; however the coastal regions saw Innisfail receiving a total of a 44.4mm and South Johnston receiving 38.4mm throughout the week. Nothing really out of the ordinary in this regard. In regards to temperature, unless we experience a late cold chill, the negative impact on fruit bloom should be minimal this season.

Banana Quality was somewhat varied between the major supermarket banners, some displays with a little more skin marking - rub marking; dry sap staining and minor neck injuries.

Retail ticket pricing in Queensland for cavendish bananas were relatively stable as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $4.49/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.50/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.50/kg in the stores visited.

AVOCADO OVERVIEW

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

·       Week 30, 2025 - The industry experienced an overall 7.87% decrease in production on the previous week’s harvest with this weeks total of 455,154 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 40,000 less tray equivalents) on Week 29, 2025 production.

Production across the country saw Central Queensland continue with the lead - accounting for 23.68% of national production, then WA/NT accounting for 19.17% ; whilst Central NSW accounted for 19.15%, followed by Southern Qld accounted for 13.59%, then North Queensland for 13.12%, Tristate for 9.64%, Sunshine Coast for 1.09%, and finally TNR at 0.55% of the total production for the week.

·      It is forecast that a total of some 429,339 tray equivalents will be dispatched this week (Week 31) nationally, with the majority of these of course being Hass! Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 386K-402K tray equivalents per week, which may have supply of some sizing under pressure again.

Our growers in the Tristate region, namely the Barham Avocado group, have started harvesting slowly, inclement weather has been negatively impacting their ability to get in and harvest any great quantity last week and this week. Hoping for sunny skies from late this week. Average fruit sizing at this early stage seems to be falling within a 23-25 count. Dry matter has been ranging 22.8 to 25% with continued testing as they move through varying blocks to ensure correct maturity levels.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week, we saw pricing as follows - Aldi’s Hass at $1.49 to $1.69eachColes Qld stores visited had Hass avos on promo at $1.50ea, and Woolworths Qld with GMAX at $2.50ea and Hass on promo for $1.50-$2.00ea.
