BANANA OVERVIEW
🍌SUPPLY UPDATE
National Banana transport figures for week 31 were a total of 471,346 ctns which was marginally up on the week prior by approximately 2,400 cartons. Temperatures in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures fall within a range of 6.4 - 18.2C - a few colder mornings and with temps dropping below 10C we can expect to see a dulling of fruit bloom due to reduced sap flow and in some cases a complete cessation of sap flow as a result of cold temperatures which causes damage to the sub-epidermal layer and results in a greying of the underpeel - damage should only be light as they length of time that temps were down to 6.4C were relatively short. Day time temperatures were still ranging 20.9 - 27.4C. Rainfall in North Qld banana growing regions this week were rather scant on the Tablelands with recordings as follows: Mareeba receiving `16.8mm for the week and Walkamin with 26.2mm; however the coastal regions saw Innisfail receiving a total of a 15.8mm and South Johnston receiving 13.2mm throughout the week.
Banana Quality was generally good though some displays with a little more skin marking and minor neck injuries noted.
Retail ticket pricing in Queensland for cavendish bananas were relatively stable as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $4.49/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.50/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.50/kg in the stores visited.
