BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

National Banana transport figures for Week 4 were some 519,829 cartons, a 92,000 carton increase on Week 3. Temperatures in the far north are similar to be last week with early A.M. temperatures falling within a range of 20.5 - 24.8C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures still ranging 28.0- 32.1C with high humidity. North Qld banana growing regions experienced further rainfalls associated with the traditional wet season: Mareeba receiving 67.0mm for the week to date; Walkamin with 73.6mm; with regions like Innisfail receiving a total so far of 177.0mm and South Johnston receiving 172.2mm throughout the week. With these weather conditions growth will be fervent.

Banana displays varied across stores visited, light skin marking present, occasional presence of bat/bird marking, some sap staining- but again generally good overall.

All Queensland major retailers had bananas on a “back to school” special with retail ticket pricing in for cavendish bananas found as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $2.49/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $2.50/kg; and Coles were also offering fruit at $2.50/kg.

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

Week 4, 2025 - Production for this week totalled 746,410 tray equivalents, approximately 40,000 more than the previous week; with approximately 17% of this volume being in sizing/quality suitable for processing or bulks for prepacking.

Production across the country saw WA/NT maintaining the lead in terms of production - accounting for 86.34% of the national production, followed by NZ accounting for 7.42% ; North Queensland accounting for 4.69% (Shepards); Central NSW for 0.90% and Tristate for 0.65% of the total production for the week.

It is forecast that a total of some 694,662 tray equivalents will be dispatched this week (Week 5) nationally, with the majority of these of course being Hass! Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 627K-651K tray equivalents per week. It is also worth noting that early Shepards made an appearance in the central markets this week and on the export market - a total of 35,000 tray equivalents with this volume expected to double for the next few weeks. We are expecting to commence our own Shepard slowly with an initial harvesting by size to occur late in W/C 9th February.
