BANANA OVERVIEW
🍌SUPPLY UPDATE
National Banana transport figures for week 38 were again just over 498,700 cartons which is a small increase of 729 cartons on the week prior. Temperatures in the far north continue to be milder this week with early A.M. temperatures falling within a range of 13.2 - 21.1C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures still ranging 22.1 - 30.1C. Rainfall in North Qld banana growing regions this week saw a few days of light showers on the Tablelands with recordings as follows: Mareeba receiving 9.4mm for the week and Walkamin with 8.4mm; with the coastal regions also experienced a few showers - Innisfail receiving a total of a 9.2mm and South Johnston receiving 4.6mm throughout the week. Whilst our banana production had slowed marginally after having had great volumes right throughout winter this reduction in volume of 10-15% is only expected to be in effect for another two week period. If the weather continues to warm up quickly, and the cool start to the mornings disappear, we will see bunch size increase more rapidly and growth flourish.
Banana skin colour was found to be a little backward in a number of stores visited this week; bloom also varied across displays, noted a little bat/bird marking and light sooty mould present in a few displays.
Retail ticket pricing in Queensland for cavendish bananas were as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $4.49/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.50-$4.90/kg depending upon location; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.50-$4.90/kg in the stores visited depending upon location.
