BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

National Banana transport figures for Week 28 were up by approximately 7,000 cartons on Week 27’s harvest at 487,754 cartons. Now that we are well and truly into winter, we can expect production to remain stable or decline slightly as the temperatures cool and the hours of sunlight are less due to shorter days. Temperatures in the far north remain cooler with temps for last week early A.M. falling within a range of 12.4 - 17.9C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures still ranging 21.4 - 26.6C. North Qld banana growing regions experienced another relatively dry week on the Tablelands with falls as follows: Mareeba receiving 0mm for the week to date; Walkamin with 2.0mm; however the coastal regions saw more rain this week with Innisfail receiving a total of 26.4mm and South Johnston totaling 35.4mm across the week.

Banana displays have improved somewhat in terms of fruit quality - bloom is now mixed with still a percentage of brighter fruit but also a percentage of fruit with dulling bloom, there is also a presence of light skin marking, thrip damage, sap staining and light neck damage in some displays etc .

Queensland major retailers had bananas priced as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $4.49/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.50-4.90/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.50-4.90/kg.

AVOCADO OVERVIEW

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows:

Week 28, 2025 - Avocado production for this week reached 497,143 tray equivalents, approximately 70,000 more than the previous week. Whilst the overall harvest was higher than the week prior, it is imperative to keep in mind that 23-25% of this total is bulk fruit/processing fruit, which surprising has been at similar level each week for the last month.

Production across the country saw North Queensland’s level of production fall to 36.22% of total production as would be expected with number of growers who have now completed their harvest; Central Queensland took the lead this week accounting for 45.24% of the national production followed next by Southern QLD for 8.29%; then WA/NT for 4.14%; then Central NSW for 2.76%; then NZ for 1.40%; then Sunshine Coast for 1.38% and finally TNR for 0.55% of the total production for the week. The preceding changing percentiles regarding region productivity, clearly demonstrates that a number of NQ Hass growers have either completed their hass season (smaller farms) or are coming closer to the end of production ( we expect our own farms to have steady production through until early August) ; the Central Qld region is also seeing a few growers complete their harvest with more major growers expected to complete harvest in late July; whilst regions further south are slowly on the increase.

It is forecast that a total of some 461,258 tray equivalents will be dispatched this week (Week 29) nationally, with the majority of these being Hass! Total avocado production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within a similar range of 419K-442K tray equivalents per week.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week, we saw pricing as follows - Aldi with Hass retailing at $1.99ea whilst GMAX were at $2.49 each;  Coles Qld stores visited had Hass avos at 2 for $4; and Woolworths were retailing Hass at $2.00 each and Gmax Avo for $2.90/piece.
