National Banana transport figures for week 31 were a total of 471,346 ctns which was marginally up on the week prior by approximately 2,400 cartons. Temperatures in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures fall within a range of 6.4 - 18.2C - a few colder mornings and with temps dropping below 10C we can expect to see a dulling of fruit bloom due to reduced sap flow and in some cases a complete cessation of sap flow as a result of cold temperatures which causes damage to the sub-epidermal layer and results in a greying of the underpeel - damage should only be light as they length of time that temps were down to 6.4C were relatively short. Day time temperatures were still ranging 20.9 - 27.4C. Rainfall in North Qld banana growing regions this week were rather scant on the Tablelands with recordings as follows: Mareeba receiving `16.8mm for the week and Walkamin with 26.2mm; however the coastal regions saw Innisfail receiving a total of a 15.8mm and South Johnston receiving 13.2mm throughout the week.

BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

National Banana transport figures for week 30 have been overstated at 468,921 as one transport agent put their figures in late for week 29. Overall compared to week 29 cut the figures are up for just shy of 25,000 cartons. Temperatures in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures fall within a range of 14.0 - 21.5C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures still ranging 25.2 - 31.3C. Rainfall in North Qld banana growing regions this week were rather scant on the Tablelands with recordings as follows: Mareeba receiving 0mm for the week and Walkamin with 19.2mm; however the coastal regions saw Innisfail receiving a total of a 44.4mm and South Johnston receiving 38.4mm throughout the week. Nothing really out of the ordinary in this regard. In regards to temperature, unless we experience a late cold chill, the negative impact on fruit bloom should be minimal this season.

Banana Quality was somewhat varied between the major supermarket banners, some displays with a little more skin marking - rub marking; dry sap staining and minor neck injuries.

Retail ticket pricing in Queensland for cavendish bananas were relatively stable as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $4.49/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.50/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.50/kg in the stores visited.

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

·       Week 30, 2025 - The industry experienced an overall 7.87% decrease in production on the previous week’s harvest with this weeks total of 455,154 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 40,000 less tray equivalents) on Week 29, 2025 production.

Production across the country saw Central Queensland continue with the lead - accounting for 23.68% of national production, then WA/NT accounting for 19.17% ; whilst Central NSW accounted for 19.15%, followed by Southern Qld accounted for 13.59%, then North Queensland for 13.12%, Tristate for 9.64%, Sunshine Coast for 1.09%, and finally TNR at 0.55% of the total production for the week.

·      It is forecast that a total of some 429,339 tray equivalents will be dispatched this week (Week 31) nationally, with the majority of these of course being Hass! Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 386K-402K tray equivalents per week, which may have supply of some sizing under pressure again.

Our growers in the Tristate region, namely the Barham Avocado group, have started harvesting slowly, inclement weather has been negatively impacting their ability to get in and harvest any great quantity last week and this week. Hoping for sunny skies from late this week. Average fruit sizing at this early stage seems to be falling within a 23-25 count. Dry matter has been ranging 22.8 to 25% with continued testing as they move through varying blocks to ensure correct maturity levels.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week, we saw pricing as follows - Aldi’s Hass at $1.49 to $1.69eachColes Qld stores visited had Hass avos on promo at $1.50ea, and Woolworths Qld with GMAX at $2.50ea and Hass on promo for $1.50-$2.00ea.

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

·       Week 28, 2025 - The industry experienced an overall 28.40% increase in production on the previous week’s harvest with this weeks total of 500,933 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 140,000 more tray equivalents) on Week 27, 2025 production.

Production across the country saw a flip back to Central Queensland taking the lead (even if only marginally) - Central Queensland accounted for 39.92%, North Qld accounted for 31.61`% , then Southern Queensland for 11.58%, Central NSW for 7.74%; WA/NT for 6.08%, Sunshine Coast for 1.70% and finally TNR at 1.38% of the total production for the week. We are not quite finished with this week now to be Rock Ridge Farming’s final for the season - at this stage we may pack for the entire week or we may be finished in less. The NQ season certainly seemed to fly by quite quickly. Cherry Creek Orchards are into their third week of packing hass for us, with a count 20 profile being the most prolific size being packed so far and dry matters ranging 23-26%; whilst Barham Avocados are expected to start by the middle of W/C 21st July since their dry matter tests are now ranging 22.4 to 25% - they are expected to start slowly.

·      It is forecast that a total of some 420,347 tray equivalents will be dispatched this week (Week 29) nationally, with the majority of these of course being Hass! Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 375K-411K tray equivalents per week, which would further support the notion that supply is continuing to tighten.

Temperatures in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures fall within a range of 8.6 - 20.7C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures still ranging 22.3 - 27.1C. We are indeed starting to see the early signs of some mild underpeel discolouration (see image below) as a result of the cooler winter temperatures occurring overnight and into the wee hours of the morning - which will mean fruit will start to loose some of its usual bright bloom as it ripens. Rainfall in North Qld banana growing regions this week were rather scant with recordings as follows: Mareeba receiving 0mm for the week; Innisfail receiving a total of a 0.6mm and South Johnston receiving 0.2mm throughout the week.

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows

·       Week 27, 2025 - The industry experienced an overall 7.01% decrease in production on the previous week’s harvest with this weeks total of 358,632 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 27,000 fewer tray equivalents) on Week 26, 2025 production.

Production across the country saw North Queensland once again slip into lead with respects to production this week (even if only marginally) - North Queensland accounted for 39.01%, Central Qld accounted for 37.87% , then Southern Queensland for 12.87%, WA for 4.22%; Central NSW for 3.93%, Sunshine Coast for 1.47% and finally TNR at 0.63% of the total production for the week. Sadly, our own Rock Ridge Farms will most likely be undertaking the final week of our avocado harvest for 2025 W/C 14/7/25. The NQ season certainly seemed to fly by quite quickly. But do not despair as our grower partners at Cherry Creek Orchards have commenced their hass season (images below taken during our farm visit on 18th June); and Barham Avocados won’t be far behind with harvesting expected to commence by the late July (we are awaiting dry matter test results for these).

·      It is forecast that a total of some 375,922 tray equivalents will be dispatched this week (Week 28) nationally, with the majority of these of course being Hass! Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 275K-345K tray equivalents per week, which would further support the notion that supply is continuing to tighten.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week, we saw pricing as follows - Aldi’s Hass at $1.49eachColes Qld stores visited had Hass avos priced at 2 for $4.00 or $2.50ea, and Woolworths Qld with GMAX at $2.50ea and Hass at $1.80ea.

BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

National Banana transport figures for week 26 were down again on last week with a total of 385,000 cartons harvested for North Qld which is a further 7.67% reduction in volume on the week prior or 32,000 ctns fewer. Temperatures in the far north have seen early A.M. temperatures fall within a range of 10.6 - 18.5C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures still ranging 20.3 - 29.1C. Rainfall in North Qld banana growing regions this week were as follows: Mareeba receiving 0mm for the week; Innisfail receiving a total of a 49.8mm and South Johnston receiving 40.2mm throughout the week.

Banana Quality was on a par with last week, minimal skin marking; a presence of light rub and a few clusters with minor neck damage; a little sooty mould found on a few lines of ladyfingers. We did experience the first of the 10C mornings experienced this week in the far north, so if the chills of the winds recently experienced in SE Qld reach north we will start to see some chill affected fruit which is associated with the dull, greying underpeel. Will keep you updated in this regard. What we saw on shelves this week was still presenting well in terms of bloom and colour.

·       Week 26, 2025 - The industry experienced an overall 10.36% decrease in production on the previous week’s harvest with this weeks total of 385,694 tray equivalents harvested and transported (approx 45,000 fewer tray equivalents) on Week 25, 2025 production.

Production across the country saw Central Queensland maintain the lead in production with an increasing number of NQ Farms having finished their harvest for this year - Central Qld accounted for 52.74% of the total volume, followed by North Queensland accounting for 34.0%, then Southern Queensland for 6.35%, Central NSW for just 3.98%; Sunshine Coast for 1.07% and finally TNR at 1.02% of the total production for the week.

·      It is forecast that a total of some 347,966 tray equivalents will be dispatched this week (Week 27) nationally, with the majority of these of course being Hass! Production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 320K-357K tray equivalents per week, which would further support the notion that supply is continuing to tighten.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week, we saw a few varied offerings in terms of pricing this week as follows - Aldi’s Hass at $1.29-$1.49eachColes Qld stores visited had Hass avos priced at 2 for $3.50, and Woolworths Qld with GMAX at $2.50ea and Hass at $1.50ea.

Overnight and early morning temps are starting to fall, if temps fall below 10C we expect to see dulling of the fruit colour as the sub-epidermal layer of the skin is impacted by temporary cessations of sap flow when the ambient temperature is cold. Rainfall in North Qld banana growing regions this week was as follows: Mareeba receiving 0.4mm for the week; and Innisfail receiving a total of a 1.6mm which is again minimal.

Quality is somewhat varied both in terms of fruit colour and degree of skin marking, also still seeing some dull fruit; as seen on shelves this week.

Retail ticket pricing in Queensland for cavendish bananas remained fairly stable as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $4.49/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.50-4.90/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.50-4.90/kg in the stores visited.
