Retail Market Week 27 - 2026

QUICKLINKS

Happy Christmas in July!

BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

National Banana transport figures for Week 26 were down by approximately 4,300 cartons on Week 25’s harvest at 473,950 cartons. Now that we are well and truly into winter, we can expect production to decline slightly as the temperatures cool and the hours of sunlight are less due to shorter days. Temperatures in the far north remain cooler with temps for last week early A.M. falling within a range of 12.6 - 18.6C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures still ranging 21.8 - 26.2C. North Qld banana growing regions experienced another relatively dry week with falls as follows: Mareeba receiving 0mm for the week to date; Walkamin with 1.0mm; the coastal regions saw more rain this week with Innisfail receiving a total of 3.0mm and South Johnston totaling 6.8mm across the week.

Banana displays have improved somewhat in terms of fruit quality - bloom is now mixed with still a percentage of brighter fruit but also a percentage of fruit with dulling bloom, there is also a presence of light skin marking, thrip damage, sap staining and light neck damage in some displays etc .

Queensland major retailers had bananas priced as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $4.49/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.50/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.50-4.90/kg.

AVOCADO OVERVIEW

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows:

Week 26, 2025 - Avocado production for this week reached 503,204 tray equivalents, approximately 33,000 more than the previous week.

Production across the country saw North Queensland maintain the lead with 52.16% of production with the principal variety being suppled, hass; Central Queensland accounted for 37.33% of the national production followed next by Southern QLD for 4.57%; then WA/NT for 2.69%; then Central NSW for 1.79%; then Sunshine Coast for 0.78%; then TNR for 0.65% of the total production for the week. The preceding changing percentiles regarding region productivity, clearly demonstrates that a number of NQ Hass growers have either completed their hass season (smaller farms) or are coming closer to the end of production ( we expect our own farms to have steady production through until early August) ; the Central Qld region is also seeing a few growers complete their harvest with more major growers expected to complete harvest in late July; whilst regions further south are slowly on the increase.

It is forecast that a total of some 413,745 tray equivalents will be dispatched this week (Week 27) nationally, with the majority of these being Hass! Total avocado production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within a similar range of 371K-401K tray equivalents per week.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week, we saw pricing as follows - Aldi with Hass retailng at $1.49ea whilst GMAX were at $2.49 each;  Coles Qld stores visited had Hass avos at $1.50 each; and Woolworths were retailing Hass at $1.50 each and Gmax Avo for $2.90/piece. Independents in the centres visited were selling larger hass 2 fo $6 and 2 for $7 - using count 14/16/18 in displays.

BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

National Banana transport figures for Week 23 were approximately 489,000 cartons which saw a 14,000 carton increase on the week prior. Temperatures in the far north have been a touch cooler with temps for last week early A.M. falling within a range of 8.5 - 20.1C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures still ranging 22.6 - 29.6C. With temperatures in some regions dropping below 10C we can expect to see the impact of this through fruit with a dull bloom as a result of the temporary cessation of sap flow resulting in greying of the sub-epidermal layer. North Qld banana growing regions experienced another relatively dry week on the Tablelands which has been great with only falls as follows: Mareeba receiving 0mm for the week to date; Walkamin with 4.8mm; the coastal regions had more significant falls this week with Innisfail receiving a total of 24.2mm and South Johnston totaling 29.2mm across the week.

Banana displays have improved somewhat in terms of fruit quality - whilst bloom is generally still on the bright side, their were a couple of displays whereby we saw fruit with a somewhat dull bloom, there was also a presence of light skin marking, thrip damage, sap staining etc .

Queensland major retailers had bananas priced as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $4.49/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.50/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.50/kg.

Retail Market Week 19 - 2026

QUICKLINKS

Well hello May the last official month of Autumn!

BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

National Banana transport figures for Week 18 were just over 467,000 cartons which was a decrease of some 35,000 on Week 17 harvest. Temperatures in the far north are similar to be last week with early A.M. temperatures falling within a range of 15.4 - 22.8C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures still ranging 26.3 - 29.3C with varying degrees of humidity. North Qld banana growing regions experienced rainfalls as follows: Mareeba receiving 1.8mm for the week to date; Walkamin with 2.1mm; the coastal regions had a lighter fall this week with Innisfail having falls totaling 49.4mm and South Johnston totaling 41.0mm across the week.

We are seeing the impact of the wet, humid weather throughout a number of Banana displays with a continued presence of sooty/blotchy mould present, somewhat dull fruit, light skin marking, thrip damage, sap staining etc - we can say that colour of fruit across the board seemed to be hitting the mark.

Queensland major retailers had bananas priced as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $3.69/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $3.50/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $1.50-4.00/kg.

AVOCADO OVERVIEW

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows:

Week 18, 2025 - Avocado production for this week reached 441,003 tray equivalents, approximately 58,000 less than the previous week.

Production across the country saw North Queensland maintain the lead with 66.31% (Hass approx 248K tray equivalents and shepards approx 66k tray equivalents) of production; followed by Central Queensland accounting for 26.12% of the national production; then WA/NT accounting for 6.35%; then Sunshine Coast for 0.50%; then Central NSW for 0.49% and Southern QLD for 0.22% of the total production for the week. The other interesting point worth noting about Week 18’s national harvest is that of the 441003 tray equivalents, just over 197,000 of these were in the form of bulks for prepacking or for processing etc for food service which puts standard trays of premium quality under pressure in terms of volume available.

It is forecast that a total of some 422,437 tray equivalents will be dispatched this week (Week 19) nationally, with the majority of these now being Hass! Total avocado production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 428K-444K tray equivalents per week. As touted by a number of growers from various farms in the far north whilst they are only at early stages of their 2026 hass harvest their trees seem lighter in numbers than first thought.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week, we saw Shepard pricing as follows - Aldi had Shepard’s at $1.49 each;  Coles Qld stores visited had Shepard avos at $2.50 each; and Woolworths were retailing Shepards at $1.50 each.

It is these types of conditions that are contributing to the increase in blotchy/sooty mould being seen on some fruit and the level of minor skin marking.

Banana displays with found to have a presence blotchy mould present, somewhat dull fruit on some displays or mixed bloom, light skin marking, thrip damage, sap staining etc - some better displays than others out there.

Queensland major retailers had bananas on special this week with pricing as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $3.99/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a special ticket price of $3.90/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $4.50 /kg based on store location visited.

National Banana transport figures for Week 11 were just over 492,000 which was approximately 3000 less cartons than the week prior. Temperatures in the far north are similar to be last week with early A.M. temperatures falling within a range of 19.3 - 25.3C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures still ranging 26.0- 30.2C with varying degrees of humidity. North Qld banana growing regions experienced further rainfalls associated with tropical season with Mareeba receiving 167mm for the week to date; Walkamin with 198.3mm; the coastal regions like Innisfail had falls totaling 242.4mm and South Johnston totaling 228mm across the week! Late this week the threat of Cyclone Narelle is becoming reality, despite being on a direct route for Coen some 490km north of Mareeba for e.g. , with the size of the weather event and the rain it will bring, we may see further falls in our region and of course the waterways will see increased flows.

We are seeing the impact of the wet, humid weather throughout a number of Banana displays with blotchy mould present, somewhat dull fruit, light skin marking, thrip damage, sap staining etc - some better displays than others out there.

AVOCADO OVERVIEW

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows:

Week 11, 2025 - Avocado production for this week reached 520,427 tray equivalents, approximately 56,000 less than the previous week.

Production across the country saw North Queensland take the lead with 58.59% (Shepard) of production; followed by WA/NT (Hass) accounting for 32.07% of the national production; then Central Queensland accounting for 8.80%; and Central NSW for 0.54% of the total production for the week.

It is forecast that a total of some 604,098 tray equivalents will be dispatched this week (Week 12) nationally, with the majority of these being Shepard! Total production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 600K-622K tray equivalents per week. It is interesting to note that if we discount the small harvests of additional varietals, then the market is approximately 2/3 shepard and 1/3 hass currently. Should note, as previously discussed under the banana supply update, it has been a rather wet week in the far north and this is hampering harvests and also means that post harvest treatments have a vital role to play.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week, we saw hass pricing as follows - Aldi had Shepard’s at $1.19 each;  Coles Qld stores visited had Shepard avos at $1.00 each; and Woolworths were retailing Shepards at $1.00-$1.50ea depending upon store location.

BANANA OVERVIEW

🍌SUPPLY UPDATE

There was very little change in the National Banana transport figures for Week 10 were approximately 495,000 cartons which represents a reduction of some 3,800 cartons on the previous week. Temperatures in the far north are similar to be last week with early A.M. temperatures falling within a range of 19.6 - 25.3C across all major growing regions; and day time temperatures still ranging 26.0- 33.7C with varying degrees of humidity. North Qld banana growing regions experienced further rainfalls associated with the aftermath of the tropical lows off the coast last week with Mareeba receiving 53mm for the week to date; Walkamin with 82mm; the coastal regions like Innisfail had falls totaling 85mm and South Johnston totaling 78mm across the week! The impact of the tropical lows moved further south and we saw flooding in the Bundaberg district with both coastal and inland routes temporarily flooded, but trucks were soon on the move again. Rainfall should be lessening, but further showers are expected in the week to come.

We are seeing the impact of the wet, humid weather throughout a number of Banana displays with blotchy mould present, somewhat dull fruit, light skin marking, thrip damage, sap staining etc - some better displays than others out there.

Queensland major retailers had bananas priced as follows: Aldi’s banana ticket price at $4.49/kg; Woolies offered fruit at a ticket price of $4.50/kg; and Coles were offering fruit at $3.99 - $4.50/kg depending upon store location and stock condition.

AVOCADO OVERVIEW

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows:

Week 10, 2025 - Avocado production for this week reached 576,559 tray equivalents, approximately 78,000 less than the previous week. If we break this quantity into the Hass vs Shepard figures, we see approximately 191K Hass and 379K Shepard tray equivalents produced. Export is definitely getting a work out with a number of parties sending smaller sized Shepards abroad, in an effort to keep the local market somewhat respectable.

Production across the country saw North Queensland take the lead with 60.08% (Shepard) of production; followed by WA/NT (Hass) accounting for 32.78% of the national production; then Central Queensland accounting for 6.72%; Central NSW for 0.29% and Tristate for 0.14% of the total production for the week. Despite an increasing supply volume of Shepards at 60% of the total supply - hass still account for 33% of the volume and this is still impacting the sales of Shepards. The continued rain in North Queensland combined with the high humidity is having an impact on fruit with a number of stores visited this week with the presence of a few pieces with rots. Postharvest treatments are a very necessary step in the preparation for market, but unfortunately will prevent all types of breakdown.

It is forecast that a total of some 529,408 tray equivalents will be dispatched this week (Week 11) nationally, with the majority of these being Shepard! Total production for the next three week period thereafter, is expected to fall within the range of 541K-584K tray equivalents per week.

In terms of Avocado retailing in the major supermarkets in Qld this week, we saw hass pricing as follows - Aldi had Shepard’s at $1.49 each;  Coles Qld stores visited had Shepard avos at $1.00 each; and Woolworths were retailing Shepards at $1.00-$1.20ea depending upon store location.

AVOCADO OVERVIEW

🥑SUPPLY UPDATE

In a nutshell the national production figures for last week were as follows:

Please be aware that the tropical low off the coast of north Queensland is bringing heavy rain this week, it is expected to continue across the weekend. There could be potential road closures due to flooding. The increased rainfall across this week has also hampered harvests. We will of course keep you informed of further developments and impacts upon supply.
